Women players made their first appearance at the Blind Football Uganda National Championship on Saturday at Makerere University.
The annual event featured eight men’s teams and two women’s teams, creating a larger platform for athletes with visual impairments and advancing women’s participation in blind football.
Agnes Baluka Masajja, a Global Sports Mentorship Program alumna and Chief of Sports at Busitema University, said the championship demonstrated the value of inclusive sport. Teams from several universities took part in the competition.
The Global Sports Mentorship Alumni, working with the Basketball Hall of Fame, supplied participating teams with football jerseys and specialised blind-football balls.
James Ssenkungu, Makerere University’s Assistant Sports Tutor and official responsible for sports for students with disabilities, said the institution hosted the championship to promote adapted sports and open more opportunities for women.
Ssenkungu also said the event could help identify players capable of representing Uganda at major international competitions.
